The legend of Sari Gelin
Oh wow, so I had an interesting chat with my Turkish-Armenian friend :-) She said the song Sari Gelin is Turkish though there are Armenian versions. It is a love song about an Armenian girl and is based on a 300 year old legend:
A Turkish Muslim sees a very pretty Armenian girl and he falls in love with her and starts to follow her around. But he is Turkish and a Muslim - she is Armenian and Christian... and their families don't want them to marry each other. The lovers end up running away together but the girl's father, a powerful man, comes after them with his men and kill the turkish man. :-(
My friend said there are other versions where she converts to islam.
The song itself is just a song by the guy singing about his love for the woman and how he wished they were of the same faith.
Or at least that's what my friend told me :-) She said that this is a very famous folk story and that there is a very interesting documentary about the problems between the Turks and the Armenians and it includes this story. Here is the documentary online, called Sari Galin: The Story.
Btw if anyone knows the story any way different, I would love to know it.

What does this "documentary" have to do with the story or song Sari Gelin? I just watched the first part and could not watch the rest since I was so disgusted with it. This so called "documentary" is made by a Turkish nationalist lobby organization whose main mission is to spend millions and millions of dollars lobbying in the USA to deny the Armenian Genocide. As to the story Sari Gelin, I am from Armenia and I have never heard that story. Perhaps it exists. I do not know. The music is indeed familiar and I recall the song but not exact words in Armenian. BTW, the link on your blog is no longer available. I had to search in Google for the song.

About the song (the endless vision version), yes we realized that the video had been taken down. Where did yu find the song? I tried to find a link to it but couldn't.
Next time I would advise you (just as a proper etiquette of blogging) before advertising a link on your personal blog to watch it first and think. You can Google "Sari Galin" or simple search in youtube. There are number of links that will pop up including an Azeri movie with the same title. That has a different story than the song.
Wow, I just watched the documentary posted on www.sarigelinbelgeseli.net and couldn’t believe my eyes on the atrocities committed by the Armenian gangs. They seem to be responsible for genocide over poor Turkish villagers, children and women.
Actually there are two main versions of the story!
Because there are 3 countries (Azerbaijan,Armenia,Turkey) and everyone says its their folksong.
"Sari gelin" - means in Turkish or Azerbaijani languages( those are very familliar) Yellow Bride (or blode Bride). The collor Yellow can stand for gold or sun/happyness or also sorrow.
1 version : Turkish boy , Georgian girl !
2 Version is Azeri boy and Armenian Girl.
In both case it stays Muslim boy and Christian girl.
I have seen the turkish and the Azeri versions of the song, I wonder if there is some Armenian translation...

Sari gelin is Azeri folk music.All lyrics is in Azeri turkish.Duduk as they call is Tutek Azeri old music instrument.And all their history is full of lie and people in Armenia have no idea about that.They are simply believes to government.And all my tryes to make chat and to prove their sick idea of Artzakh being a nonsence was useless.

First,if you are really interested about that issue(actually LIE) please show me some CONCRETE evidences,like documents.Not some pieces from a conference with some speakers that we don't know if they are objectif or NOT.Ottoman Empire was a empire which was noting everything bureaucraticly.I'm not saying that we should just consider one side.We ARE searching some documents,real documents or attestants from other countries.But we can't find any document about so-called Armenian Genocide.Plus,unfortunatelly they are so subjectif,you can't deny it.

First of all, I should say that I am Iranian, and as I know, all of the Azerbaijan, Armenia and Turkey, was parts of Iran, many years ago. So there is not any contradiction in having a common culture and also music, lyrics, fictions etc.
As a matter of fact, I asked some Armenian and Turk folks about this song, and I realized that this song is made after a genocide. But both sides say that it was a genocide made by the other side.
The thing that matters, is that we are not here to conclude that Turks were killed by Armenians or vice versa. There are some organizations that have lots of documentations and you can ask them about it.
The song is great. I cannot realize the Armenian or Turkish lyrics, but there is also some Persian versions which are not the translation of that lyrics.
Finally, if you want to struggle in such way, to convince others that you are right, I can tell you that you'll do nothing.

BTW. "Sari galin" is not only lie of armenians...They are just provoking all Turkish world.
It is established among historians internationally that the first holocaust of the 20th Century was that of the Armenians of the Ottoman Empire, mainly in 1915. It was for this that the word "genocide" was coined. Patriotic Turkish historians who dare to announce this fact with evidence have had their citizenship withdrawn and are then hounded around the globe by the Turkish state.
It seems holocaust denial is acceptable in polite society now - as long as it's this one. Turks: I suggest you suspend your disbelief, don't believe what was told you in school. Is patriotism believing / inventing lies about your country's past?

This beautiful song is an Azerbaijani masterpiece; Sari Gelin means literary in Azeri 'Yellow Bride'. The song is about a Mohammedan (Azeri) boy and a Georgian girl (Similar to the story of Ali and Nino, but it comes from a time before the story was written). Some even say Kurban Said based Nino Kipiani (the Georgian girl) on the Yellow Bride, however to make it distinct he gave her black hair. The other stories about an Armenian girl and Azeri boy could be true, but it should not be forgotten that the majority of women with golden/yellow hair in the Caucasus region come from either Russia, Northern Georgia and Chechniya; the one that makes most sense from a social and geographic perspective is Georgia.

This is an old Armenian song about an Armenian boy and a mountain girl that he fell in love with , but could not have because of the hostilities between their parants.
The name of the song is Sari Aghchik meaning mountain girl. Turks transformed it into Sari Gelin. Azeris have 100% nothing to do with it other than being Turkish speakers and borrowing songs from the peoples of Ottoman empire.

About the documentary by the same name it's an infamous propaganda piece made by the Turkish government and distributed in schools. In it they shamelessly attempt to diminish the Armenian Genocide and brand Armenians as instigaters. It's been very controversial even in Turkey and condemned by historians around the world. Azerbaijanis should really stop propagating nonsense. This song has nothing to do with them nor Georgians! Even the documentary refers to this song as Armenian and chosen particularly to represent tensed relations between Armenians and Turks.

Anyway, the song is loved and shared by Azeri's, Turks and Armenians alike, and it's originally Azeri. The story of the Turkish guy and Georgian girl is from Turkey though, and it isn't the original story. All the countries have their unique versions of the song.

I want to tell you that there was no problems between Turks and Armenians 300 years ago.
The documentary IS distributed by the Turkish government to schools as propaganda against the Armenians. And lots of Turks in Turkey stand beside Armenians especially after the assassination of Hrant Dink. It's the government that is denying it. The story sounds about right, there are different versions of it and it is normally associated with Armenians especially in Turkey. It's a sad song.
This song comes in four different languages: Armenian, Azerbaijani, Persian, and Turkish. Each one has a different meaning and a different legend behind it. None of them are accurate, but this is what I’ve gathered from the stories I’ve heard here and there. I am an Iranian of Azeri descent so I’ve heard lots of stories, anyway here goes.
In Turkish and Azerbaijani “Sari” Means “Yellow” but in Armenian I think it means “Mountain” (sorry if I’m wrong, I don’t know Armenian). “Gelin” means “Bride” in Turkish and in Azerbaijani, so the literal translation of the title would be “Yellow Bride” which could mean a fair skinned bride, a blonde bride, a bride in a yellow dress, or a metaphor for the sun. In Persian the title is completely different and has no relation whatsoever to the words yellow or bride, the title is “Saghiye Meykharan” which means “The Drunkard Cupbearer”. The Turkish version is about the love story you just told (the Turkish Muslim boy and the Armenian Christian girl). The Armenian version is about a boy who falls in love with a “Mountain Girl” which I think is the translation of the title of the song in Armenian “Sari Aghjik”. The Azerbaijani version is about the sun, according to legends the sun was stolen in the 3000th year of the creation of the earth, the song reflects their yearning to get the sun back. The Persian version is about a guy who falls in love with a maiden cupbearer. They all share the same melody, just different lyrics.
