TLC

I've been in CanadaLand the past week or so, being a kid again, not doing anything and watching Tv, while being spoilt by mi madre :-) I am usually a CNN fan since I don't have it at home but what i like to watch in the mornings is the show What Not to Wear. It's kind of fun because you see people who (you hope) are worst dressed than you and then you learn what they should wear etc. This channel also has a lot of baby shows. Straight after the WNTW show, there is a Baby Story show which is like a documentary of a couple who are pregnant and they go through the birth etc. Oh My... did that get my clock ticking. The whole baby thing is so amazing. Imagine being able to bring to life another little human being - Amazing no? It is one of the most wonderous things in the world. And then a little kid belongs to you and they will grow up. It's amazing amazing.

the verdict

So has anyone been watching the Dollhouse? they had the second episode just yesterday and I must say that I like it so far. It has big potentials. Not the best actors, sometimes it becomes a little bit fake, but it's pretty good. The story is interesting and currently, I am hooked. That's a pretty good start right? :-)

I would love to hear from others who have been watching.

Dollhouse countdown!

Something major is happening tomorrow. Hallelujah. Joss Whedan's Dollhouse will be debuting on the evil channel and oh baby doll, I am trembling with excitement.
I have waited for this moment a long time, counting the months and the weeks and the days.
First it was Buffy, then Firefly, then Doctor Horrible and now.... welcome to the Dollhouse.

Here is Joss' interview on NPR which was on today. Totally recommended.

Meanwhile I am wondering why the evil channel is putting the show on such a horrible time slot, 9pm on friday nights. This is HORRIBLE (no pun intended!). Esta bien... we will still watch it. But why did Joss go back to Fox??? Grr. Such a bad move.
As you can tell, I am very excited!

A real pageant

Tonight I watched a really interesting documentary on PBS about the Miss Navajo Pageant (official site). One of the few requirements is that the contestants should know how to speak Navajo language, be over 18 and not married.
The pageant followed a very interesting schedule:
Day 1: they were asked about the Navajo government and council etc.
Day 2: they had to butcher a live sheep, clean it and cook it. Then they were tested on their grasp of the Navajo language
Day 3: they showcase their traditional skills
Day 4: The coronation

The women were beautiful, not in the glamorous Hollywood sense, rather in their smooth, tanned skins and high cheekbones and straight black hair. They seemed so sweet and so simple and so removed from the beauty pageants that are run these days where the women look so fake and decadent.

The Olympics

Watching the Olympics this year has been kind of tough for me, mainly because we don't have a TV. :-P The only time I get to watch it is when I go to the gym! I get on a cardio machine and watch one of the silent screens in front of me and since somehow they don't have close caption, I imagine what they say. And time between the commercials flies actually. Even the commercials have suddenly become pretty innovative and interesting. Who has seen the one about wind energy and the ancient greek who throws the discus and because of the wind, the discus changes course and topples the parthenon? :-P

And so 10 days or so have passed and although it is such a huge event in the world, it hasn't really made its self aware in my life.
It makes you wonder how easy it is to not be aware of things going on around you. and this leads to two questions: how much are you really aware of what's going on around you, and how much do you really need to be aware of what is going on around you. Do I really need to know about the Olympics?

New Obsession

My new obsession, Flight of the Conchords, is a TV show on HBO about two NZ-ers trying to make it as a band in NY. The show and the songs in it are some of the most creative and funny i have ever heard. They are ear worms and when i play them, I go in a trance of ecstasy.. :-P

Here is one of the songs from the show which they play in concert -- my second goal in life right now is to watch these guys in concert. Anyway Jemaine and Bret explain the song so no more introduction but listen well to the lyrics.

Christine has introduced me to a lot of new obsessions lately... remind me to tell you about the other shows that are a must.

Dr Horrible: I've got a PhD in Horribleness.

Ahoy all you fans of Joss Whedan.
DaJoss has a new 3-part musical-comedy web series, Dr Horrible, that is being released incrementally this week before being taken off the web this sunday, after which it will be available on DVD. So... you only have a couple of more days before it is no more. They have released parts 1 and 2 and 3 will be released tomorrow. Part 2 is quite hilarious... I had a couple of outbursts of laughter while watching at work!
It's a superhero spoof starring Neil Patrick Harris as a supervillain wannabe who dreams of being accepted into the Evil League of Evil (what a sweet name!). Thwarting him from his goal is his nemesis, Captain Hammer (played by "Firefly" star Nathan Fillion), as well as his affection for a girl from the Laundromat (played by Felicia Day).

Spoof of 300

Hilarious!
It's not accurate, but...

I also liked the South park spoof of 300 - when Xerxes ended up being a... no no I dont want to ruin the twist. But a hilarious episode to watch - for those that haven't seen it.

Dancing

Next Tuesday will be the final night of my first semester of Flamenco - I have really really enjoyed myself, learning and dancing. It's a huge rush everytime we go through one of the routines and I actually do it well. Of course many times I don't but hey, it's better to forget those times! :-) It is a shame I won't be performing in the recital :-(
Meanwhile on TV, the new season of So You Think You Can Dance in underway. So every wednesday for the past 2 weeks I have enjoyed 2 hours of dancing on TV - and these couples are really good. Cereally!

[Ref. South Park episode of ManBearPig with Al Gore where he kept saying I'm totally cereal! and I'm super cereal! - Everyone knows how to access the episode if you haven't seen it right? Alvaro and I have been killing ourselves with this expression!! :-P]

Anyhoo, check this site for some of the dances of the night. I recommend watching this one by a hiphop dancer (the guy) and a contemporary dancer (the girl). It is really a lovely piece and the story it tried to tell is just beautiful. I almost feel like it can be about any relationship.
The human body is just amazing to me - when I hear a beautiful voice, when I see a beautiful dance... it always amazes me the power we all have in our hand.. i mean body! :-P

Joss Whedon

I got reminded of firefly today, the wonderful TV show I love and that got canceled after one season by the evil empire of Murdoch, that gray wily orange animal with foxlike tendencies.
Did you know Firefly is rated at 15 in the top 25 best scifi TV shows and movies, in the whole wide world? makes me want to go back and watch those last 4 episodes which I have left off watching because I don't want the season to end.

Also seems that Joss Whedon's next project is a scifi thriller called Goners which I hope won't have a lot of horror. Ok maybe it doesn't mean much based on the other movies on the list. However it is interesting that Heroes has had so much support. I saw the first episode and somehow never watched any other other ones. Maybe that was a mistake. But it seems that all the episodes are available free on the internet. You know having access to the old episodes is actually a really smart idea - people can catch up to the season any time they want.
Darn... Whedon should be making a new TV show - I would watch it, wouldn't you?
